I want to thank my two great friends Tony Gwynn and Merv Rettenmund for all of the endless hours they’ve spent and knowledge they’ve shared with me. If class is how you treat people you don’t need, then these two are surely true class.

FALL INSTRUCTIONAL LINE DRIVE HITTING LEAGUE

   Latest News and Announcements

October 7, 2007

Congratulations to Team 2 for surviving a three-team dogfight on the final day of the season to earn the first-ever Fall Line Drive League Championship!  Team 2 eked out a victory over second place Team 4 by the razor-thin margin of .6 points -- 79.9 to 79.3, and Team 3 was close behind with a cumulative score of 78.5.  A mere 1.4 points separated the three teams, all of whom had a record of 4 wins and 1 loss.

The Hitters on the Championship squad are:  Eric Dressen (Elkhorn), Ben Roberts (Millard North), Tim Noel (Millard South), Jamie Johnson (Skutt), Jeff Hansen (Elkhorn) and Tyler Holl (Millard Sout).

In the Individual Championship, Team 3's Derek Noel (Omaha Central) went wire-to-wire in first place to claim the crown with 30.0 points.  Derek held the first place slot in the cumulative rankings every week of the season.  Tim Noel of Team 2 finished second with 24.0 points.

Team 2, with an astonishing 28 point performance, vaulted from fourth to first this week.  Their Week 4 performance came close to matching their combined point total from the first three weeks (35.7).  Team 2 was led by Tim Noel with 8.0 points, with assistance from Eric Dressen and Jamie Johnson (5.0 pts each) and Jeff Hansen and Ben Roberts (4.0 pts each).  Tremendous team effort and great improvement, Team 2!

Going into the final week, Derek Noel continues to lead all hitters with 23.5 points.  Tim Noel (no relation) is in second place with 15.5 points.

Congratulations to Team 5 for jumping up to first place with a strong 16.8 point performance, led by Week 3 leader, Derek Petrich with 7.5 points.  Derek Noel remains in first place in the individual cumulative points race with 18.5, followed by Petrich with 14.5 and Adam Shaw with 13.5.

Four teams (2, 3, 4 and 5) all have a 2-1 record.  The cumulative point total are used to break the tie, resulting in the teams being ranked 5-4-3-2.

Here is the link to videos that were shot last Sunday.  Please review these before tomorrow's games.

Hitters probably noticed the video equipment that was set up at the ballfield for Week 2.  The Blind Guy Hitting Instructional Technology Department videotaped several swings by each Hitter using motion analysis software called Motionview from www.allsportstec.com.  Mark reviewed the videos last night and made various observations and comments for each Hitter.  (A video projector was used to blow the images up so that Mark could see them.)  Video segments and comments for each Hitter will be posted on the website before Sunday's games.  Be sure to check here for further information.

September 16, 2007

Congratulations to Team 4 for jumping from last place to second place overall with an offensive outburst of 22.5 points for Week 2.  This surpasses the previous team point total of 18.0 set by Team 3 in Week 1.  Team 4 was led by Adam Shaw, who belted a home run en route to posting a Week 2 high of 9.0 points.  Shaw jumped up to second place in the cumulative standings, trailing only Team 3's Derek Noel, who had another strong outing with 7.0 points, including a home run.

Team 3 remains in the #1 position as the only undefeated team and also has the highest cumulative points total.

Overall, the point total for all Hitters for Week 2 was 89.1, up 12.8% over the Week 1 production of 79 points.  Good improvement, guys.

As Mark has stated, "we're here to improve."  The most important consideration is not the  total number of points earned by a team or by a hitter, but developing proper swing mechanics that will lead to consistent results.  The focus is on learning and improvement.  Don't get discouraged.  This is a chance to work out the kinks before the spring season.

Scoring:

   Single - 1 pt

   Gapper - 2 pts

   Home Run - 4 pts

Scorers have discretion to add 1/2 point bonus for any hit

Congratulations to Derek Noel (Omaha Central) of Team 3 for being the top hitter for Week 1 with 9 points.

Congratulations to Tim Noel (Millard South) of Team 2 for hitting a home run in his second at bat and achieving the second highest point total for Week 1 with 8 points.

Since Team 1 has seven Hitters and all other teams have six Hitters, Team 1's team score for each game will be adjusted by multiplying their aggregate Hitter points by the fraction 6/7.  For example, during Week 1, Team 1 Hitters earned a total of 13 points.  Their adjusted score is 11.1.  (13 x 6/7 = 11.14)  Making this adjustment will allow us to compare team scores on an equal basis.  For purposes of identifying Top Hitters for the team or for the League Leaderboard, each individual on Team 1 will be awarded his actual score (no 6/7 adjustment).

A similar adjustment to increase team scores will be made in the case of teams that have one or two absent players.  (Divide aggregate Hitter points by number of Hitters present, then multiply by number of Hitters on team.) However, if more than two players are absent, the lowest Hitter score for that team from the previous week will be used for the missing Hitters.

Players who are absent will not receive any points for that week for purposes of individual recognition.

Adjustments have been made to the Week 1 Scores for Team 1 and Teams 2 and 4 (5 Hitters present).
